The Government has put in place a wide-ranging plan to rebuild and strengthen the Nation's security system. The following are the key agencies in the $80 Billion/year U.S. intelligence community.

You need to think through how the work of these agencies could effect your employees and your operations. Be especially mindful of any activities that could appear to be threatening to the U.S. from the perspective of any of these agencies.

CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY

The CIA has clandestine, paramilitary, human intelligence, and high-tech resources to predict the future, handle threatening situations, and otherwise coordinate the efforts of the rest of the intelligence community.

NATIONAL SECURITY AGENCY

The NSA is the Nation's cryptologic organization. It coordinates, directs, and performs highly specialized activities to protect U.S. information systems and produce foreign intelligence information.

NATIONAL IMAGERY AND MAPPING AGENCY

NIMA provides timely, relevant and accurate geo-spatial intelligence in all its forms, and from whatever source, to ensure the knowledge foundation for planning, decision, and action in support of National security.

DEFENSE INTELLIGENCE AGENCY

The DIA tracks the war-making abilities and intentions of other nations, and focuses on the asymmetry of warfare, the quality of military databases, integration for operations, and development of the military workforce.

FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION

The FBI collects intelligence on domestic threats, including foreign-influenced terrorist groups. The FBI has a new set of priorities on counter-terrorism, cyber- crimes, and communication with State and local police.

OFFICE OF HOMELAND SECURITY

Working with Federal, State and local governments, OHS is implementing a broad national plan to secure the U.S. from terrorist attacks.

TREASURY DEPARTMENT

The Treasury Department guards the stability of the U.S. economy, manages the Governments finances, protects the Nation's leaders, and tries to insure a safe and drug-free environment. It has new powers to expose suspicious money transactions, enabling the U.S. to freeze the assets of terrorist groups.

IMMIGRATION AND NATURALIZATION SERVICE

The INS Protects U.S. borders, and uses new technology to track non-citizens.

U.S. COAST GUARD

The USCG defends against high risk vessels, and protects coastal facilities such as power plants, refineries, ship building yards, and ports. The USCG is developing new technology to track all vessels in U.S. waters.

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL INTELLIGENCE SERVICE

EIS serves as an early-warning and response unit against bio-terrorist attacks.

TRANSPORTATION SECURITY ADMINISTRATION

The new TSA uses Federal security agents and sophisticated technology to make travel safe.

FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY

FEMA provides resources, manpower and training to State and local firefighters, police, and emergency medical technicians.
